About Screenshot Gold

A photographic memory for your life on a Mac.

Screenshot Gold is a Mac app that makes it easier to capture, organize, and revisit thousands of screenshots. It preserves the work, discoveries, conversations, games, crises, and ordinary moments your camera roll cannot see.

What is Screenshot Gold?

Screenshot Gold is an advanced screen camera and screenshot organizer for macOS. It builds on the Mac's capture tools with a persistent Compact Panel, fast folder routing, automatic screenshots, personal keyboard shortcuts, notifications, and a larger archive for browsing your digital history.

The goal is not merely to collect more files. It is to give the part of your life that happens on a computer the same kind of photographic memory you already give the physical world.

Why was Screenshot Gold made?

You may have thousands of photos in your camera roll, but almost no pictures of what you were doing on your computer three years ago. Final documents and task lists show what survived. They rarely show the early idea, the browser tabs around it, the mistakes, the small wins, the difficult conversations, or the week when everything changed.

The founders already took screenshots of their digital lives in high school and university. Years later, they realized most people were spending enormous amounts of time on screens without preserving that part of life. Screenshot Gold grew from one belief: ordinary screenshots become extraordinary when enough time passes.

Who should use Screenshot Gold?

Builders and agentic coders

Collect precise visual references, localhost changes, bugs, and inspiration without pasting one screenshot at a time.

Researchers and students

Preserve sources, questions, drafts, applications, projects, and the visible path from an early idea to finished work.

Teams and founders

Keep a visual history of progress, decisions, launches, customer conversations, crises, and how the company changed.

Gamers and collectors

Capture rare loot, boss fights, discoveries, builds, worlds, and the moments that disappear when the session ends.

Families

Give children and future generations a detailed record of learning, creativity, interests, and life on their first computers.

Your older self

Return to the apps, moods, work, conversations, and ordinary details that a list of completed tasks cannot recreate.

How it works

From taking one screenshot to building a useful memory.

Screenshot Gold adds a workflow before, during, and after capture. These are the main parts of that system.

01

Compact Panel

Keep multiple screenshots in a persistent working panel. Capture a set, edit or drag the images where they are needed, save them into folders, then clear the panel when the job is complete.

02

Quick Folders

Place the destinations you use most inside the Compact Panel. Save one screenshot—or the same screenshot—to multiple chosen folders without repeatedly searching through Finder.

03

Auto Shots

Choose an interval and let Screenshot Gold take full-screen captures while your Mac is awake and unlocked. Auto Shots can build a day-by-day, week-by-week, and month-by-month visual history even when you forget to capture manually.

04

Unsorted

Use the menu bar icon as an inbox. Drop in a screenshot, image, file, or folder now, continue working, and organize it later when you have time to make the right decision.

05

Work Session

Choose a set of folders for the work in front of you. While the session is on, route new screenshots into those destinations so research, design, client, or project folders stay updated together.

06

Shortcuts and Advanced Settings

Assign Command-Shift letter shortcuts to folder routes and specialized capture flows such as bursts, all connected monitors, silent capture, text extraction, queued images, or time-based sequences.

07

Notifications

Choose a screenshot folder and let valuable ideas resurface. Motivation, affirmations, grateful moments, or reminders you saved months ago can return without sending you into a distracting feed.

08

All Screenshots and folders

Browse the wider history while keeping meaningful projects organized in their own folders. Aliases can expose organized captures in the broader history without duplicating the original image files.

How is it different from the macOS screenshot system?

macOS screenshot tools

Excellent for capturing a screen, window, or selected area and saving or sharing that individual result.

Screenshot Gold

Designed for the larger flow: keeping many captures available, routing them to useful places, automating capture, resurfacing memories, and browsing years of visual history.

Why do screenshots matter for AI agents?

Agents can inspect code and text, but visual context still matters. A cropped screenshot can show the exact spacing, state, bug, inspiration, or change you mean more quickly than a long explanation. Screenshot Gold helps you collect those images as an ordered visual set instead of interrupting the work after every capture.

There is also a longer story. As more work moves into agents, screenshots become a history of how those tools grew, how your workflow changed, and what people and agents were building together at a particular moment in time.

Where are screenshots stored, and can Screenshot Gold see them?

Local by default

Your routine screenshot archive remains on your Mac by default. Screenshot Gold does not receive a company-side copy of every screenshot you take.

Optional AI is your choice

The routine archive is not sent to AI by default. When you invoke an AI feature or enable an automatic AI workflow, selected screenshots and related context may be sent to the provider you configured under that provider's terms.

You choose the backup

If you want a cloud copy, save or back up the Screenshot Gold folder through a storage service you choose. You can also keep an external-drive backup of the underlying files and folders.

No advertising business

Screenshot Gold does not sell your screenshot data or serve ads. The planned business model is a simple $1-per-month subscription in the future. Read the Privacy Policy for the full data-handling explanation.

Who made Screenshot Gold?

Screenshot Gold was started by university friends who independently developed the same unusual habit: photographing life on their screens. The missing screenshots from earlier years made the value of the habit clearer, and seeing how rarely other people preserved their digital lives turned that shared instinct into a product.

The app is being built to make the habit effortless enough for everyone—not only obsessive screenshot collectors—to leave behind a rich, organized visual history.
